Now that I have your attention...
Let's talk about why this does not work and how slow change is the way to better health.
Why Doesn't It Work?
Simple answer...our bodies do not like big shocking changes. They thrive in a state of homeostasis or equilibrium. The faster we try to change our behaviors and our bodies, the faster we are going to set ourselves up for disaster. Too much muscle teardown in too short a period of time can cause a whole host of problems...shin splints, knee tears, back pain, overtraining syndrome, or illness. Three months with your foot elevated is no way to improve your health. Slow your wild down! It's not worth the pain.
How is Slow Change The Better Way?
We can make better progress with our health and athletic pursuits if we ease into the program especially as we age. Making a few little changes each month (Month 1: Eat 1 extra veggie per day & cut back on sodas, Month 2: Walk 20 minutes 3 days per week) seems like it will take forever to hit our goals but after a year, it adds up to real, sustainable gains. Imagine what you could accomplish in two years. Just because a change is small, does not mean it is not mighty.
